Defense Attorney
Also known as: Public Defender, Private Counsel
A lawyer who represents a person accused of a crime in court.
Plain English
A defense attorney is your lawyer if you're charged with a crime. They protect your rights, challenge the prosecution's evidence, negotiate with prosecutors, and represent you in court. You can hire a private defense attorney, or if you cannot afford one, the court appoints a public defender to represent you for free.
Example
After being arrested for burglary, Marcus could not afford a lawyer, so the court assigned him a public defender who would represent him throughout the criminal case.
Used in a sentence
“The defense attorney filed a motion to suppress evidence that was obtained illegally.”
