About LawMeaning
LawMeaning is a plain-English reference for legal vocabulary. Most legal dictionaries are written for lawyers — they assume you already understand half the words in the definition. We write for everyone else: the renter reading a lease, the small-business owner signing a contract, the juror trying to follow what the judge just said.
How entries are written
Each entry has the same shape: a one-sentence definition, a plain-English explanation, an everyday example, and a sample sentence. For terms whose meaning differs by state, we also include short state-specific summaries.
What this is not
LawMeaning is not legal advice. The law varies by jurisdiction and changes frequently. If you are dealing with a real legal problem, talk to a licensed attorney in your state.
Sources
Definitions are written by an AI editorial pipeline using authoritative sources (Cornell Wex, Black's Law Dictionary, the U.S. Code, and state statutes), then reviewed for clarity. We update entries when laws materially change.
