armed robbery
Taking property from someone by force or threat while carrying a weapon.
Plain English
Armed robbery is a serious crime where someone steals from another person using violence, threats, or intimidation while possessing a weapon—whether a gun, knife, or other dangerous object. The weapon doesn't have to be used; simply displaying it or implying you have one can constitute armed robbery. This crime is treated much more severely than regular theft because the presence of a weapon creates extreme danger and fear for the victim.
Example
A person walks into a convenience store, pulls out a handgun, points it at the clerk, and demands money from the register. Even if the gun isn't loaded or the person never fires it, this is armed robbery because a weapon was used to take property through force or threat.
Used in a sentence
“The defendant was convicted of armed robbery after police found him with a stolen wallet and the gun he used to threaten the victim.”
