Release
A written agreement giving up a legal right or claim.
Plain English
A release is a document where someone agrees to give up a legal claim or right they have against another person. When you sign a release, you're saying you won't sue or pursue that claim anymore. Releases are common in settlement agreements, after accidents, or when leaving a job. Once signed, you generally cannot go back and pursue the claim later.
Example
After a car accident, the insurance company offers you $5,000 to settle. You sign a release agreeing not to sue the driver or their insurance company for any injuries or damages from that accident.
Used in a sentence
