Benefit

In one sentence

Something of value a party receives or gains from a contract.

Plain English

Benefit in contract law is what one party receives or stands to gain from the agreement. It's the positive side of the exchange—the thing you want in return for your detriment. A benefit can be money, goods, services, or the right to do something you couldn't do before. For a contract to be binding, both parties must receive some benefit, even if the benefits aren't equal in value. The law cares that something of value flows to each side.

Example

A plumber agrees to fix a homeowner's burst pipe for $300. The homeowner's benefit is the repaired plumbing; the plumber's benefit is the $300 payment. Each party receives something they value.

Used in a sentence

The contract was enforceable because both parties received a clear benefit from the agreement.
